Trends & Timelines
How fast is Codex growing?
Codex went from about 600,000 weekly users at the start of 2026 to more than 5 million by June 2 — better than 8x in five months. The 3 million and 4 million milestones landed about two weeks apart in April. All milestones come from OpenAI announcements and Sam Altman's posts on X, so treat them as vendor-reported.
| Date | Weekly users | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Start of 2026 | ~600K | Baseline OpenAI cites in its June 2 announcement. |

| Apr 21, 2026 | 4M | Announced by Sam Altman on X. |
| Jun 2, 2026 | 5M+ | OpenAI announcement; ~20% of users are knowledge workers. |

The latest at our July 9, 2026 check was v0.144.0, published the same day GPT-5.6 went GA and Codex merged into the ChatGPT desktop app. We track notable ones on the releases page.

How has Codex pricing changed?
On April 2, 2026, OpenAI moved Codex from per-message limits to API-token-aligned credits for Plus, Pro, Business, and new Enterprise plans; existing Enterprise plans followed on April 23. OpenAI's own estimate of typical spend is $100–200 per developer per month, varying with model choice, instance count, automations, and fast mode. Current per-plan limits are on ourusage limits page.
| Date | Change |
|---|---|
| Apr 2, 2026 | Per-message limits replaced with API-token-aligned credits for Plus, Pro, Business, and new Enterprise plans. |
| Apr 23, 2026 | Existing Enterprise plans (including Edu, Health, and Gov) moved to the credit system. |
What is Sam Altman's usage-limit reset pledge?
Altman pledged on X that Codex usage limits will reset at each additional million weekly users, up to 10 million. With the count past 5 million as of June 2, 2026, that leaves five more pledged resets — a recurring event worth watching if you pay for a Codex plan. We cover each milestone as it lands in the news feed.
